Сын джазового гитариста, Билли Корган вырос в пригороде Чикаго, в 19 покинув дом, чтобы уехать во Флориду с его неоперившейся готической группой, "The markes". Но команда потерпела неудачу и он в 1988-м возвратился Чикаго. В магазине, куда он устроился, Билли встретил Джеймса Иху (гитара), с которым они начали записываться, используя в качестве ударных драм-машину.

Вскоре Корган познакомился с гитаристкой Д'Арси Вретски, которая стала играть на басу вместе с ними. Группа, доукомплектованная барабанщиком Джимми Чамберлина, получила название "Smashing pumpkins". В 1990-м "Тыквы" выпустили свой первый сингл, "I am one", изданный на местном лейбле "Limited Potential". Пластинка быстро разошлась, и в декабре появился очередной релиз, "Tristessa".
