In 1969 the 25-year-old student Konrad Mallison organized a mammoth festival in Essen's Grugahalle at his own risk. The three-day festival happening offered concerts until the early hours of the morning and a light show that was sensational for the time. The Pink Floyd, founded four years earlier, were also there, four years after their founding they were on the verge of superstar status. A year after David Gilmour replaced Syd Barrett on vocals and guitar, the band was still heavily influenced by psychedelic rock and experimental sound and delivered a psychedelic show in a class of its own to the Essen audience.
