Olga Umpeleva

Olga Umpeleva was born in Moscow. She grew up at the end of a 90th — final stage of «perestroika» (restructuring) epoch when the wave of clumsy and horrible advertizing typography spilled out onto the streets. However it has not undermined the young girl's belief in the intrinsic beauty and magic power of the printed text and in 2002 she became a student of Moscow State Printing Arts University. During and after her studies Olga worked for several companies (ParaType, Brownfox, Art. Lebedev Studio and others) as an illustrator and font and graphic designer with specialization in infographics. At that time she got familiar and was fascinated by the culture of Spain. Her graduation design project was dealt with a book about Federico Garcia Lorca. Working on the book Olga was deeply impressed by the marvelous life and tragic death of Lorca during the Civil War and was completely immersed into the magic world of his poetry. As a result a font based on the handwriting of the poet appeared. This slightly nervous, but nevertheless accurate and well readable font inexplicably keeps Lorca's intonation. The verses typed by the font are perceived not as printed but as just read by the author. The voice of freedom and independence can be heard. The serious and thoughtful attitude to the fonts and working with the recognized masters of type design helped Olga to became a qualified designer.

Federico is a typeface based on the handwriting of Federico Garcia Lorca, the eminent Spanish poet and playwright (1898-1936). Original version was designed for a book about Lorca. The face has two styles. One looks like an original poets writing, the second looks like if Lorca would write with a ball pen. Federico includes many alternative glyphs and ligatures, which make it look like a real writing of an emotional, negligent, creative man. Despite the fact that Garcia Lorca has written in spanish, the font has western and eastern european, cyrillic, turkish letters.
