Эудженио, президенту крупной компании, постоянно снятся кошмары. Каждую ночь во сне он кончает жизнь самоубийством: то вешается, то стреляется, то выбрасывается из окна высотки. А всё из-за боязни, что его бизнес пойдёт плохо и дело закончится нищетой. Почитаешь газеты, а там безработица, инфляция, девальвация. Жена возмущена его ночными криками. У неё более важные заботы, - постоянное взвешивание сисек показывает, что одна становится всё тяжелее другой. Эудженио в связи с депрессией решил обратиться к психоаналитику. Тот сказал, что если Эудженио так боится нищеты, то стоит свыкнуться с этой мыслью, потренироваться, попробовать стать действительно нищим. Тогда, если придёт разорение, из-за приобретённой привычки мысли о самоубийстве в голову уже не придут. Эудженио решил последовать совету. Сообщил на работе, что уезжает на несколько недель на Ближний Восток, поручив текущие дела и заботу о жене вице-президенту. Под чужим именем стал уборщиком на одном из своих предприятий. Получил жильё в доме, который он когда-то построил для своих работников. Там царит полная разруха. Соседкой оказалась девушка по имени Марта, которой сразу пришлось выручать нового жильца из-за неприятных сюрпризов "качественного" жилья. Марта перебивается случайными заработками. Пытается торговать в разнос, иногда печатает на машинке, снимается в рекламе (если пригласят), пыталась сниматься в кино, но роли были опасными, - чуть зазеваешься, уйдёшь беременной. Из-за дурацкой выходки Эудженио потерял работу. Началось время настоящей нищеты и голода. Но душа полна Мартой. В конце концов Эудженио понял, что можно быть бедным и счастливым. Правда, надо иметь много денег!

Яхту миллионера Костаса Мараса готовят к регате. Костас присутствует. На причал приехала его жена, красавица Иро. Поинтересовалась, как идут дела. Костас уверен, что победит, ведь его яхте нет равных среди участников. Иро сказала, что тогда она спокойна и отправится за покупками. По пути её машину преследуют, но Иро оторвалась от погони. Приехала к любовнику. После интима началось обсуждение, - пара намерена убить Костаса. Задумка проста, - столкнуть Мараса за борт в удачный момент. Спастись с пробитым черепом ночью в море нереально, несмотря на то, что Костас отличный пловец. Гонка началась, на борту "Айвенго" помимо команды сам Костас, Иро, помощник Мараса Никос с невестой Нелли. К вечеру ветер усилился, будет шторм. Никос готовится исполнить задуманное преступление. Вышел на палубу и исчез. Начались поиски, утром подключилась береговая охрана. Безрезультатно. Костас подошёл к Иро и предложил рассказать, если её что-то беспокоит. Пока не поздно! Прибыл инспектор береговой охраны. Нелли в беседе с ним заявила, что не верит в несчастный случай, ведь Никос очень опытный моряк. Она считает, что его кто-то толкнул. А сюжет закручивается и становится труднопредсказуемым.
